Ok, so when I turn the car to accessory mode (to read the manual in the garage  ), the car immediately makes this sound that seems to come from the back of the car and sounds like a hydraulic lift raising or lowering. It lasts for about 3 seconds. What is that?

And then secondly - just curious here - why does it take so long for the car to start. Even on youtube videos and the one I drove at Lambo Chicago, once you turn the ignition, it just turns and turns for about 5 seconds before starting.

On the first noise, mine does that when I open the drivers door if it's been more than an hour or two since the car was running; I think I've been told it's the fuel pump or something along those lines. It's a little high pitched whir for a few seconds right?

On the start-up, I'm guessing that's just a characteristic of high revving (shorter stroke) 10+ cylinder engines; maybe takes a couple seconds to get it up to starting speed. Someone more mechanically inclined can probably correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Yeah it's the high pitched whine. Come to think of it, it does it when the driver's side door is open, not accessory mode.

one more - lets say I have the car in neutral coasting to a stop light if that changes to green and I'm going say 30mph, if I hit the upshift lever will it auto select the correct gear to be in (ie, it won't hurt the car right)?

The first noise sounds like that of the brake booster charging the brake lines. But, considering you guys have a vehicle that's MUCH different than a Toyota... I would just be guessing.

Sounds like it could be the fuel pump.

The first noise IS the electric fuel pump charging the fuel lines...you should wait till that nosie stops prior to starting your car...

If you hit the shifter AS you are moving it will select the correct gear to corespond with the RPM of the engine...In AUTO mode the car WILL not over rev...it will auto shift for you.

I thought it was the hydraulic pump for the eGear pressurizing the system?

Yes, the noise you hear when you first open the door is the hydraulic pump for the E-Gear....should last for 3-5 seconds. The second sound you hear, very similiar in sound, is the fuel pump...this one goes longer than the first.

No worries, all normal sounds....

If it's a girl, tell her it sounds like terrorists have wired a bomb into the car, then dig around under the dash to 'diffuse' the bomb and say it will all be ok. Then... :bj:

Not sure if the 2nd one is a characteristic of the car. In normal cars I'd be looking at the battery to make sure it's not going flat, or checking the spark plugs to make sure they're not coated and you're getting proper sparks.

It's only supposed to take 1 combustion cycle to start the engine up. The battery should already be cranking the engine over.

The only thing I can think of is if Lambo has some kind of sequential firing mechanism and the startup is required for a certain piston for fire up first.

I think, this is somewhat along the lines of truth. If you look on the engine, at least on the murci and diablo. there is always a plaque with the firing order. could very well be that the sequence has to start in a particular order. Or it could be that it simply takes the starter longer to get the engine to speed than in a conventional car, which isn't outside the realm of possibility.

Yes, the firing order text is an honor not bestowed on the Gallardo. Guess they figure it only has ten cylinders so who needs it.

Out of curiousity, what's the firing order on an Audi TT?

Why switch to neutral to coast to a light? I just leave the car in gear and it blips the throttle and downshifts. Besides sounding AWESOME, the car is instantly reading for hitting the gas and taking off.

zzzzdoc - yeah I don't coast it usually, but occasionally when I'm coming to a long stop like a train or something long, I'll just let it coast.
