View Full Version : Gassing up Gallardo-- OVERFLOW!

All:
I have heard through various sources, including a lot boy at my local dealership, that the vertical orientation of the fuel filler neck on a Gallardo (looking at an 06) has caused problems with gas pump nozzles. Specifically, I have heard that the auto-shutoff feature sometimes fails to work when fueling a Gallardo. I guess this can cause overfill and spilling. This worries me because of the location of the (freakin' hot) catalytic converter-- right above where fuel would be spilled.
Has anyone had this problem? If so, are there any good fixes? Have you reported it to Lambo and have they done anything about it? Any guidance would be sincerely appreciated!

It's a valid concern; several burnt down Gallardo's were caused by fueling. I've never had an issue but I also know round about how much to expect will go in mine when I fuel up and I keep an eye on it when I know it should be full in a few more seconds. And of course NEVER top off, just fill till it stops and then you're done.

best bet is to keep an eye on how much you need to fill. better to be a few gallons less than standing next to a toasted G

Or in a toasted G...
Sometimes less, is more.

I haven't had any trouch, knock on wood.
I do find it very hard to keep the gas pump going when I fill up. I usually have to fill it up very slowly while holding the nozzle.

Dont park a hot car in the garage, if I had my house would have burned..and the people sleeping may have died...lesson learned...I put it out with a garden hose though, the fire dept didnt show up for 15 min, and if the tanks would have blown, all my neighborhood would have gone up in flames, and I dont have multi million dollar liability...

Holy SHIT! Your right that situation could have even gone worse if it was in your garage. I'm glad your alright man those pics look pretty insane. Did you park your G in the driveway after a drive, then it just combusted into flames? I almost always park my G in the garage when i get home, unless I'm going to wash it later. Sometimes this is even late at night.... I need to be more cautious now. I've always heard of these stories but never really paid attention to them. I guess I'm going to have to change that. Once agin glad to hear you and your family are ok.

Yes it was about 10:30 at night, came home after a 40 mile drive, parked in front of the house and 5 minutes later it fired off, with flames 8 feet high..surreal looking...and if it had been in the garage, the car on the lift above would have gone off also...

Glad to hear you are ok. Did they ever find a cause of the fire?

Any updates on the cause of the fire? I just purchased a G a week ago and have also heard combustion stories.

I have started using a small towel and putting it around the pump while I am filling it up b/c I have seen the gas shoot out of the gas tank while being filled.

I tend to not go full speed at the pump for that reason; if I'm lucky enough to be at a station with the handles that have multiple stopping points I just set it on the first and let it take its time filling, otherwise I have to hold the damn thing like half way on for five minutes.

Norcal, Did you just fill up your gas tank that day and had gas spill out?
