Okay, gotta give a plug to Jon at http://www.perfectionauto.net/ for car detailing in Florida. He's based out of Orlando but has a pretty dedicated following of customers throughout Florida so what he does is keeps an open line of communication with you and tries to set up a block of customers in a geographic region of Florida around the same time so he can come out and stay somewhere while working on all the cars during the day. Sounds kind of crazy but his work is excellent, I heard about him from a few people on Fchat.
One of my cars is a big black Mercedes G55 so we're talking large flat vertical panels all down the side that show swirl marks and other imperfections like no other car. After a few dealer car washes from having it in for service, that's another story, the finish was not looking hot. It took a lot of work with buffing, polishing, etc. but the car looked new when it was done, even the wheel wells and the interior of the wheels were spotless. So, give Jon a call if you live in FL, see what he can do for you.

The kids are getting a cleaning today, Jon is taking care of the g-wagen and g spyder as we speak. Check out the G-Wagen blingin':

It had bad swirl marks and crap after the dealer got their hands on it from the first major service, and my own neglect, but Jon got all that taken care of over the course of about 12 hours a few months ago. Now I am more careful with how I wash it and he comes every quarter to do the full cleanup and wax and all that stuff I know nothing about.

I have real bad swirl marks all over my car, but I think that's due to my own stupidity other than anything else. In full sun you can see them.
Did he use a polisher or any kind of liquid? Do you happen to know?
pdisme
03-08-2007, 03:56 PM
Jon checks in here from time to time, I'll ask him to check it out and let you know. He did use a polisher but what was on it and all the rest of that wizardry is beyond me.
Looks great. cant wait for love bug season!

Man, the g-wagen is a love bug destroyer with that vertical front window, I avoid it of course but if you get caught off guard, they practically cover the window.

Wow thats a fantastic picture.... thanks! LOL
I have all the pics of the G Spider on my computer - just gotta sort them and send them over
Lasombra52 - I used a porter cable and a fairly light polish for the G55. If your swirls are as bad as you describe it may take a more "intense" treatment ;). Check out autopia and autogeek.net for more info, how-to's, faq's, etc. if you want to try it yourself. Email me if you have any questions - happy to help!
Thanks,
Jon

I've been doing mine myself (labor of love sort of deal, or is it just labor?)
I haven't let anyone else touch it, except for this one Griot's garage guy who got a tiny spot out that I couldn't.
Of course, my LS430 needs serious work. If you're ever on the other side of the Tampa Bay, I'd like to work out something, Jon.
Never seen the G wagon, Dave. I had an ex-partner who bought one right after he left town (hopefully not with my money.) Gotta bring it sometime to one of the dinner things.

I actually brought it to the cars and coffee time before last, since I skipped last month, but I think you were out of town for that one.
Yeah, I consider car detailing labor along the lines of labor pains. No plans to do it myself anymore, I hate it.

zzzzdoc - sounds like a full day's work. Send me an email and we'll set something up. Let me know if you're available during the week or not. I'm kinda backed up for my out of town work, but I'll see what I can set up and work out the specifics.

It amazes me how many cars have orange peel right from the factory. I can semi understand it on a chevy cavalier or such but I've seen brand new 996's with orange peel. Lambo does paint right :)

Tell me about it... the worst seem to be the Benz's :( and most Ferrari's are delivered in less then perfect shape and with the best paint job if you look close enough :banghead:
Well, spiderwebbing cant be totally fixed can it? as its a problem in the actual color layer, not the clearcoat. So couldn't you technically decline to to take delivery if the paint is not to your liking?

Now I need to find someone new to detail the cars 'cause I sure as hell can't do it correctly.

Yeah sorry about the sudden notice. I was expecting to have a few months to transition from one to the next, but they came back to told me they like me to start Monday. I am sad to see the detailing business go on hold for now, maybe permanently, but excited about the new opportunity. I'll keep in touch on the forums of course and hopefully see everyone around at the shows, events, races, etc.

So now that I have no one to detail my cars, I'm going to go out and give it a try before tomorrow morning's cars & coffee; if I have any dirty spots that won't come off, I just use steel wool right?

Steel wool and dawn. If that doesn't work, you can by aircraft grade paint stripper. That will remove anything, it should look great!!!

LOL, I love it when I see people washing their cars with dish soap; they always tell me how clean it gets the car. I wonder why they don't wax with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter afterwards.

Zaino actually recommends washing a car with dish soap if its the first time you are going to use thier system. The theory is that the alkaline base in the soap will remove other waxes, sealents, and grease so that you have a clean base to begin with. Otherwise thier cross linked poylmers won't properly bond.
Washing once in a while with dishsoap (as in the idea of first using Zaino) will not harm anything and leave you paint so clean you could eat off of it (harhar, stupid joke). However, washing frequently with a detergent will dry out your plastic, weather stripping, rubber, and paint. That is why I say screw it and use aircraft grade paint stripper. It cleans everything!!!!

I cringed when i saw that on the zaino website. I know washing with dawn every once in a while wont hurt, but why use dawn when you can wash the car with a gentle shampoo and use a car safe citrus degreaser for the stubborn stuff!?
thats what i thought anyway. just a bad practice to instill in people.

I certaintly wouldn't recommend using it often, however, since Zaino only applies to Zaino, its a safe guard to make sure that other waxes or sealents on the paint are fully removed before applying Zaino. Once Zaino is applied, there is no need to do it again.
