View Full Version : 3d Model - Lamborghini Gallardo

Hi Guys I am currently in the process of building a Lamborghini Gallardo in 3d for my final year University Project.
I'll be building it in a way that it could be incorporated into a computer game for either XBOX 360 or Playstation 3 and researching and developing techniques on how to do this.
Anyhow first of all here are the blueprints I created in Photoshop a few months back...
http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/wp-content/Portfolio//GallardoCoupeBlueprint.jpg
A few month old render I did (new one coming soon) :
http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/Art/Cars/Lamborghini_Gallardo/wip/22122006/800/side0000-1.png
A few screenshots:

http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/Art/Cars/Lamborghini_Gallardo/wip/14022007/Wheel2.png
I need high resolution photographs of the following to help me progress with this model:
Sat navigation system
Accelerator, Brake, Clutch (Manual)
Roof interior ceiling
Rotor/Disc Brake
There are photographs avaialble of all these on the internet but they are generally low resolution which makes it difficult for me to reproduce.
Here is the interior so far...

Simon, I created an album in my gallery where I'll load some of these pics for you. Here's the gallery link:

I loaded up the highest res front rotor pic I have of my car. I'll snap some of the other ones you're looking for later tonight.

Simon, have you ever played a game called Carmageddon? :) It's some PC-based game that was out a few years ago, I loved it, you get different cars and have to either complete the course, destroy all your opponents vehicles or kill all the pedestrians. :lol2: The vehicles would all drive and handle like you expect though, I used to prefer the dump truck.

Talus, about 3 months. The blueprint took me 2 weeks to do.
pdisme: Yea many years ago I played it :) I'm more into simulator type games since i don't have my own sports car (I drive a Fiat Punto lol)

hehe, its a 1.2 litre 5 door lacking every sport feature you can think of. But it beats the Rover Metro i was driving before ;) Not my car mind u, its the parents that I drive as I'm still at University so not exactly got the cash for my own :P
Its funny in away, I think I go into the kind of detail I do since I won't be able to afford one of these cars in the field of work I will be doing so by making one I feel a sense of ownership :)
I'm trying to be an RAF Pilot (much healthier and better payed lifestyle) but I failed the interview so i have to retry in 6 months :p I need more voluntary leadership experience apparently.
Anyhow, are you waiting to get home before you can take these photographs? What do you do as a job?

That's where you're wrong; if you do something extremely well in a niche market, which what you do certainly is, you'd be surprised where it will take you.

Flying jets would definitely be cool, 10,000 horsepower vs 500. :)
Yes on the photos, I'm going to shoot the pedals and other stuff tonight for you.

Simon, I just took some more pics and posted what I could; the battery ran out on me before I could get closeups of the nav unit, I'll take those for you tomorrow. Here's the pedals and a bunch of shots around the soft top:

Did you want me to try to get you some other angle shots of the calipers, etc.? I'm limited with what I can shoot of course since I can't remove my wheels. :)
pssst, the steering wheel is on the wrong side...
just kidding,
The rendering looks amazing mate, keep up the good work.

Will do, I left the camera battery charging when I left this morning so I'll be able to take a bunch tonight. Stupid Canon battery is a POS, it can only take maybe 50 flash shots before it dies, but it's a three year old pocket camera, my Digital Rebel XT can take hundreds of flash shots and thousands of regular shots on one charge.

Quoting from a different thread:
Thank you very much you too, these images will be a great help :) Feel free to critise my 3d model aswell since I have never seen one in real life so I might have things wrong :)
Are you kidding me? If you've never seen a G in real life, your work is that much more impressive, it's very realistic. Have you at least received measurements from anyone or is it all based on pictures you've found?
SimonGibson
02-24-2007, 11:56 AM
I created the blueprints from scratch. They were originally based off some inaccurate low resolution blueprints (500 pixels length) but because they were so terrible to work form I created my own. This meant I created a good foundation to work from for the 3d model. I got the dimensions from searching the internet and asking around.
Everything has been done from just looking at photographs.

Simon, I've got the new pics online, some of the calipers and some of the nav unit:
http://www.talklambo.com/pics/showgallery.php/cat/504
Yes, I know the wheels, brakes, etc. are extremely dirty, got caught in the rain on the way home last weekend and haven't had a chance to wash the car yet. :) The pictures where there's a gap between the caliper and wheel are the rears where I have 20" rims, the ones where there's not much gap are from the front wheels.

These photographs are incredible, exactly what I wanted, very much apreciated!
More requests:
1) The back side of the seats
2) Front Lights (look at the image of my car to see where exactly)
http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/Art/Cars/Lamborghini_Gallardo/ReferenceRequests/24_02_2007/LightReference_Required.jpg
3) Close up of Behind Wing mirror
I don't like to come across as the guy who asks for an inch and takes a mile sorry :P These are areas that I am running into walls with as I make progress.

Your rear rotors are too small if the model has the stock 19" wheels. :)
SimonGibson
02-24-2007, 02:00 PM
They are not the correct rear rotors don't you worry. They were taken from a Ferrari 360 model I worked on so just consider them tempory ;) (Hence I asked you for rotor reference)

I forgot your door pics, I'll take some later today or tomorrow, I'm going to take her out for a spin later and maybe wash it so I'll wait 'till then.
That Dave, hes such a nice fellow.
Nice work simon, only thing i see that looks off is around the rear wheel, looks "weird". dont know what, might be the angle? Also, as you say you're using a temp for the rotor so that could be it. otherwise :grinning-smiley-003
SimonGibson
02-24-2007, 06:31 PM
Wheel has a few degree camber and temp rotor is tiny compared to real thing (can't change size on the temp otherwise the 5 nuts wouldn't match the wheel). Maybe thats why it looks wierd.

I've got hi-res pics of the headlights from multiple angles, the open door and the seat back. Although how many video games will let you place items behind the seat in a Gallardo? :) Maybe a hand gun or grendate launcher if it's Grand Theft Auto.

What's up with the shadowing in the passenger grille in the front? Looks kinda odd to me.
This thing looks amazing. There is NO WAY that I could do that, period. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!

thats Not a shadow. Because I did a print screen from my 3d application when you look through the Grill you can see the reverse side of the side of the car you can not see (i guess thats a tough one to understand hehe :D).

Curious, does the fuel filler cap always go opposite the driver's side of the car? Mine is on the passenger's side in my LHD and I noticed in your drawings it's on the opposite side of mine for your RHD.

its actually on both sides of the car at the minute as i basically make one side and mirror it until near the end of the project where it finally becomes asymmetrical after I have made it as good as I can :)

Okies, i still prefer it with those oldskool type lambo doors to be honest.
Test render of wheel:
I'm not sure if I've got time to do the sidewall (as I'd model it and normal map it if i did :D)

Exterior test render. No fancy materials applied on the interior yet.

Issues:
*Scratches on car (i have no idea whats causing this)
*I accidently Duplicated the Wing Mirror which is causing an artifact.
*The materials of the rear lights need alot more work, I need to experiment with different material setups.
*Door handle is not subdivided correctly
*Car paint will be replaced with a more advanced shader to get some nice paint flakes
*Takes way to long to render (the rear lights are the cause of this).

Modelling and Render test updates:
Modelled: Stitching and new Air Con blow things :D
(NB the renders don't show the stitching since it was added since rendering but I will get some updates soon)

Heres another update.
Finished the bull and added a speckle map to the paint shader, its slightly improved it but no where near how nice it should be. Paint is still an on going area to improve.
Fullsize screenshot (http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/Art/Cars/Lamborghini_Gallardo/wip/10_04_2007/badge.png)
http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/Art/Cars/Lamborghini_Gallardo/wip/10_04_2007/800/badge.png
Here we can see the low poly (left) and high poly badge. I created a normal map from the high poly and applied to the low poly badge. I've also done the same with the seat but its not in a nice enough state to view yet.

http://www.simon-gibson.co.uk/Art/Cars/Lamborghini_Gallardo/wip/10_04_2007/800/badge2.png
Here is the diffuse and normal map I created.

And finally here is another test render (in HD since i did it over night). Paint still does not achieve what I am aiming for.

Simon, what kind of computer do you have? Does it take forever to build those?
SimonGibson
04-10-2007, 12:37 PM
my rendering pc specs are
64bit Athlon 3000
2 gigabytes of RAM
I don't konw what you mean by build. To technically produce the 3d model it has taken about 4 months of my time to get all this detail in. To render the high definition image took around 1 hour 30 mins for that 1 still frame.

Yeah, I meant build as render, I figured it had to chew up a decent amount of processing time to render those.

I meant to include these:
