...does it work?

a buddy approached me about gas deregulazation and a company that was coming to town. anyone have any experiences w/ multi-level marketing? at first it sounded a bit pyramid-like but it's a commodity that is used everyday and the catch is this new company is going to be cheaper than the others.

my only concern is market saturation. there's a limited number of people who require gas, etc. etc.

anyway, just wondering if anyone has any experience in this type of business. thx in advance.

I have experience, and I wouldn't do it. I generally stay away from any of these "schemes", just as a general rule.

This came up on 6speed recently, and someone on the thread said that they know 4 of the top guys, 4 different MLM's. They are making millions off of what everyone is selling for them. No-one else makes money, just the top person. That top person laughs the whole way to the bank. And your friends start to hate you because all you do is try to sell to anyone that will buy.

Whatever your decision, good luck. But I would stay away.

Even though its a credible form of marketing, very few are able to get in at the right time...furthermore i cant stand getting a pathetic email or call from an old acquaintance soley to hit me up for their latest rat race venture

stay FAR away

Got a relative who's into the Amway thing, no one talks to them anymore because every conversation with their own family members is an attempt to sell Amway crap or induct someone new under them.

Been in a couple and I've learnt a lot in terms of psychology of becoming successful when I was much younger. Met a lot of great and inspirational people. I must admit I owe a lot to them for what I learnt. Didn't end up making it with either of them. Making the assumption that everything is done ethically, it basically comes down to not whether if it works, but whether if you will work. It's a vehicle to reach your dreams. It requires a person to become much greater than who they currently are to get the results you want.

I personally wouldn't make someone feel bad if that was the only avenue they had to move towards their dreams and goals with their current skill set. I'd respect their decision and wish them well, but it's not for me.

my sister is involved with this crap. constantly trying to get me to buy some shitty "nascar developed car wax"... that wipes on and wipes off. and my experience has taught me, any wax that can be wiped on and off, probably isn't that great.

well, the thing about this mlm is, it's selling gas.

it's something that everyone uses everyday and it's at a cheaper price.

i still think it smells pyramidy. lol

What always amazes me is how hooked the MLM recruiters get people...it's unbeleivable they will take the last dollar from their starving parents if it went a $1 sale...

If its the gas pills that I asked about then here is how it works:

Basically makes your combustion chamber work better, so it makes more hp, more torque, and better fuel economy. Sad thing is, it actually does work. And no I don't do these, i just know the facts. But it is only a HUGE benefit to diesels.

One capsule costs $1.25 I think, and gets you 7 - 14% better gas mileage.

40 mpg vehicle with 10 gallon tank uses half a capsule = 440 miles and $.63 for the capsule
14% better gas mileage = 440 miles, so you basically spent 63 cents for one gallon of gas.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Cost savings, instead of spending $3.00 for a gallon of gas, you spent 63 cents.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

That's what I know about the gas pills anyways. They work wonders on diesel engines gaining 25 to 30% fuel economy on those engines. Still not sure if that's what vchon was referring to though.

Sounds like it might not be such a bad product especially as the demand for energy efficent cars - particulary desiel increase over time.

Okay, I'm confused then. how can you sell gas for the house? Natural gas? And how can that be a MLM??? Please explain a little bit better, if possible.

ok, this is how my friend explained it.

you get people to switch over to using the new gas company, but it's a mlm because you go around and get people to sign up to sell gas, etc. you also get a % and a comission every person you sign up to use the new gas company, and a comission when you get people to sign up to sell gas to others.

...hope this makes a little more sense now. i guess i was a bit vague when explaining the 1st time around.

I've seen this before, except for electricity. Ever since Texas deregulated the power industry in Texas, MLMers have been crawling out from every rock trying to recruit you into some MLM electric company.

Bottom line is that MLM is a joke. You will spend all your time bugging the hell out of people to buy your BS and you will lose all your friends. If you spent all that energy into a legit business idea, you would have a lot more success, and get to keep your friends.

On top of that, MLMers are the most hard headed, brain washed people I have ever met. It's like a cult. They will look you in the eye and swear on their dead child's grave about how much money you will be making, yet they are broke as a joke.

I would run far away from any MLM offer

I've always found it entertaining when things that are sold in that manner are advertised on people's cars; like Mary Kay or Amway, Amsoil, work from home and make big $$, etc. but it's always some piece of shit car.

I would stay far away from MLM and especially from any MLM that requires you to PAY them for signing up. I think there are laws now or atleast lawsuits about those kinds anyway.

MLM sucks ass. I've been in 4 of them. I learned years ago the following regarding making $$$ ...

You don't join an MLM, you create one.
You don't buy a franchise, you offer them.
You don't buy stock, you sell it.
You don't become a customer of that informercial product that will "make you rich with one tiny classified ad", you sell the product.
You don't distribute, you manufacture.
You don't retail, you wholesale.
You don't join an affiliate program, you offer it.

My favorite MLM facial was at a party -- some knucklehead going from person to person with some stupid ass hook "Hey, how would you like to earn $10K/mo?" ... when he finally asked me I responded with "Sorry, I'm not interested in taking a 90% pay cut". Walked away with his tail between his legs.

When you ask these clowns how much they are making the answer is always the same "My friend / My buddy / My associate / My partner" is making $xxx,xxx/mo!" ... never the guy peddling the scheme.
