LOS ANGELES — The aptly named Currency Motor Cars has rolled out a customized $350,000 2006 BMW M5 with a turbocharged V10 engine that churns out 810 horses and has a top speed of 240 mph.

"It's a Super Sleeper," said Brent Harvey, company spokesman. "It looks like a beautiful BMW. You'd never know what it was unless you looked under the rear carriage or opened the door and saw the $100,000 interior."

The company, which was founded — appropriately enough — by Ron Cash, says it will build only 10 units of the car described as "the most powerful luxury sedan on the planet."

The black beauty's cabin is outfitted with such touches as "Florida crocodile," inspired by such classic vehicles as the old Delahaye and Bugatti roadsters of the 1930s.

The engine features a handcrafted intercooled system, is linked to a seven-speed transmission and sprints from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

This is the first offering from the new design company, which says it will tune vehicles from Rolls-Royces to Corvettes. "We decided to do the M5 first because it was considered impossible to do," Harvey said.

What this means to you: Currency Motor Cars is gearing up to take your cash.

I like the look EXCEPT for the Croc skin seats.

Wow, I don't use the words overpriced and ugly very often, but they both EPICLY describe what I'm seeing here.

First time I've ever seen anything like that; they running the turbos at the low velocity end of the exhaust system? That just looks like it's asking for trouble.

Actually, this mounting position is becoming more and more popular. The Vette crowd is going this route as well. It really only makes logical sense on vehicles with shoe-horned engines (e.g.: M5, SRT Cherokee, Corvette, yadda, yadda, yadda...). It seems to make lots of power while keeping the heat out of the engine bay, but I see more problems coming from this rather than benefits. One splash of cool water from a puddle and you might crack the turbine housings. Also, plumbing back to the engine usually is a nightmare...

I was thinking you'd have much greater lag too since there's a much larger volume of air between the engine and turbo when there compared to when it's right on the header/downpipe junction.

Yeah, one would think so... but, it seems like there is almost no lag. The guys on Horsepower TV did the turbo set up on a Corvette and there was NO lag at all. The turbines spooled up at 1000 RPM and peak power came in between 4000-5000 RPM. I'm still fascinated by these setups... It goes against everything that should be...:headbang:
