What's your favorite luxury watch?
My favorite? One that I'll probably never be able to afford, the AP Royal Oak Concept watch, sells for about $200k last I heard:

I like Movados. I'm simple :D
Though I did try on a $30k Rolex and felt like a rich guy for a few seconds. But the salesman looked wary so I took it rather quickly.
Dave, i LOVE the roo concept! However when the time comes that i have $200k at my disposal a lambo is at the top of my list, after a bitchin' house of course.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, I'd need to have a lot more money and a lot of other things I'd rather have already purchased first before dropping $200k on a watch would enter the realm of possibility. :lol2: Must be quite a feeling to walk around with the cost of most people's houses on your arm, I'm not sure if I could do that, I think it would actually make me feel quite uncomfortable but maybe that would change if I actually did have $200k to blow on a watch, then it might just be another trinket.

I don't think I'd ever get to the point where I'd spend $200k on a watch. I mean, some people would say that about a car, but when you spend $200k on a car it's more often than not FAR BETTER to drive than a regular car. Not sure how much better a watch can tell time with an increase in price.
If I bought a $200k watch, it'd only be to watch it appreciate in value, not to actually wear.

They're more about the art form of watchmaking than the actual telling of time at that point. For example, the AP Concept uses a very unusual alloy for the case that requires 60 hours of labor just for that one part and then it's about accuracy and the number of 'complications', or neat things the watchmaker has figured out how to do, using nothing more than gears, springs, etc. Not this one but some of these watches, if kept wound, can do unusual things such as keeping accurate time over a period of 400 years for a specific geographic location on the globe, taking into account planetary orbit, etc., it's wild.

That's pretty cool. I saw a special on the History Channel about a watch that had 23 complications. Seemed unreal.
I appreciate the craftsmanship of the watches, or anything if done well enough, like the steel drums I saw that where rediculously expensive, and I couldn't figure out why until I learned it takes over 120 hours of labor to produce one, usually done by one man the entire time.

I always wondered the same as Minch00. Why would someone spend 200 grand on a watch? But now reading this thread kinda puts some light on the subject. The whole art form and craftmanship makes perfect sense. Like how someone would pay 4 million dollars for a painting. It's a similar concept.
I'm not much of a watch person. But I'd prolly go with a high end Patek Philippe if given the chance.

I've got a Tag Heuer auto chrono that I purchased before I knew enough about watches to know Tag is marketing and not watchmaking, but even though it's six years old, last time I was in Vegas I got an offer of $1800 for it if I were to trade it on a ~$5000 watch I was looking at, it cost about $3k originally. I declined since I figured I'd get more enjoyment out of spending the money on other things and I don't really wear a watch that often anyway.

You think that's marketing. Try finding a Rolex that's only off 1 minute per day. You think for that much money the damn thing could actually keep time.

My real favorite is a circa 1980s Piaget Polo in yellow gold. Classy, understated, elegant. Off by 1 second a year in its worst year. Usually perfect.
Hublot Big Bang. A huge favorite of mine:
YES... YES... YES! I love the Big Bang. I was looking at them at the Watch room at Harrods' last time I was in London. Beautiful watch.
I was looking at APs the other day at international mall. Right around the $12k range so not the totally over the top priced APs. Gorgeous watches.
Dave I think the watch you're talking about with the 21 complications or W/e is the Patek Philipp grand complications or something. Blue on one side, and you can flip it over and theres a white face. Go for like $1.2mill or something.
Anybody got the hookup on watches? I'd really like to get into collecting watches, but affordability is an issue for me right now :lol2:

well rolex honestly makes a great watch. dont get me wrong. i just find all too often "collectors" have them. honda makes a great car, but i wouldnt call myself a car collector with a garageful of civics :D rolexes are also mass produced to about 450,000 makes a year. omega is 2nd with around 120k. these numbers arent exact, but its nice when you own a watch thats 1 of 100 and you cant buy in in chinatown or canal street in nyc for 50 bucks :]
europastar.com is a good website to get some ideas on what you want - my personal fav is fpjourne.com

Don't laugh. I wear a similar Casio to that. I need a digital watch for work. Anesthesia is the only field in medicine whose billing is time based, and analog watches won't cut it in low light - hence, the Casio.
Rolexes suck. Keep crappy time and the crystals scratch non-stop.
My favorite is a 25yo Piaget Polo. And someday, perhaps, a Big Bang. I've got a good friend who is totally into watches, so I can talk the talk. But, evidently, not walk the walk with the AP, etc.

I rarely ever wear my Tag, mostly because I know it's more of a fashion statement than anything else and I bought it when I thought Tag made quality time pieces. I'll probably wear a watch again at some point when I choose to buy a nice one, but there's so many things I'd rather spend $25k on right now. :)

Stryke
07-21-2007, 01:24 PM
The ability to keep time with any mechanical piece is going to be limited typically to COSC specs of +4-6 second per day but Rolex does a great job as a daily wearer/beater as they use 904L steel compared with many brands 316L. They also stamp their cases out of a solid block rather than mold them which gives them enormous strength. Overall Rolex makes pretty simple pieces without too many complications but they are sturdy, classic, hold great value and overall a terrific timepiece. :)
take it you like rolex :lol2:

The thing that bothers me most about the Rolex is just how bad time it keeps. Everyone I know has the same criticism of them.
I have a 25yo Piaget Polo. Sapphire crystal so it doesn't scratch daily like the Rolex, and it keeps time accurate to a second or two A YEAR!!!!!! Plus it's style seems timeless.
Now the AP's - those are nice watches. And I do lust after the Hublot Big Bang. They had to rip it off my hand in Vegas a few months ago.

It's running 10 minutes fast. My watch says its only 1010:1101,
There are 10 kinds of people. Those that can read that watch, and those that can't.

How does that watch show the hours with only four binary digits and no AM/PM indicator? After 4 PM do you have to wait until midnight to tell time again?

My parents and I went to Jared today in search for a new watch since my Movado got stolen last time we had a party at my house.
I liked the Tag Heuer Automatic WJF211A.BA0570. Its priced nearly $1,800. They sales lady said we can open a Jared card. Pay 20% down which is around $400 and about $145 per month for 1 year with no interest. Do you guys think that's a good deal or can I find a better watch for the same price?

That doesn't seem like a good deal for you; they're offering to charge you a 20% premium to pay over 12 months, even a credit card won't screw you that bad.
As far as Tag Heuer watches, I would not get an automatic from them, they're just garbage movements. Tag Heuer is all about name and marketing and not about quality watchmaking; I know this because I have one. :lol2: :lol2: It can randomly gain or loose a few minutes per day, even if I keep it wound throughout the day, and that was even the case when it was new and when it came back from a $500 service it required after it stopped working at 16 months old (warranty is 12 months). The only saving grace for my watch is that I bought it for $1800 and three years later I was looking at a different watch at a place in Vegas, the new one would have been about $5k (don't know if it was a good deal or not, didn't research) and they were going to give me $1200 on the Tag. I'm sure the deal wasn't good for them to be able to give me that much for it but it still made me happy that I could get that for it, well if you don't factor in the $500 repair bill.
So, the moral of the story is if you want a Tag, get it for looks and get it in quartz so you save yourself from having an unreliable movement and possibly costly repairs due to the low quality, because they do make nice looking watches, I especially like the non-traditional bands. If you want a quality watch though, get something else which I'm sure some suggestions in this thread will help with, or start a new thread about finding a watch in the price range you're looking for and I bet some people will be able to help. I rarely wear a watch so I haven't looked into replacing mine lately but I will eventually, with a tourbillon from a real watchmaker.
